The SBIR and STTR collaborate with the National Institution of Health (NIH) to provide a variety of funding opportunities for startups and small businesses. The SBIR and STTR are currently the largest sources for technology commercialization in the United States. These programs are known as America's Seed Fund because they invest over 1 billion dollars with a mission to save more lives and improve overall health. Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR)

The NIH SBIR program funds startup small businesses that are trying to commercialize innovative biomedical technologies. In addition, this program assists small businesses in conducting federal research, developing useful technologies, and creating new jobs.

The NIH STTR is similar to the NIH SBIR except that it requires the small business to collaborate with a research institution. They must collaborate with a research institution for Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the Process. This is another great funding opportunity for startup small businesses.
